What is a Patterdale Terrier?

Just when you think you have gained a lot of knowledge about the Terrier breeds another one pops up. This times it’s the Patterdale Terrier. Basically, though this particular dog is considered to be a type of Terrier and not a distinct breed. It is also considered to be a rare breed at least in the eyes of the American Rare Breed Association.

While this dog makes a terrific family pet it is also noted for its top performance capabilities in canine sports and also for its agility.

If you don’t mind putting some extra work into this dog then you will find it will be a perfect choice as a pet. The Patterdale Terrier is known to be mentally headstrong when it comes to socializing. You also are going to have to be prepared for the high energy levels they possess and their love for constantly bounding about the house.

When it comes to looks you will be hard pressed not to fall in love with the Patterdale Terrier just based on this alone. The coat can vary from being very smooth or rough or even a combination.

Color wise they come in a great selection, which includes a blue colour that is considered to be rare. You should never see one that is totally white. If you happen to notice large patches of white that are not near the chest or toes then it could be that the dog you are looking at has been cross bred.

If you are curious about the high energy of the Patterdale Terrier it means looking back at their history where they were originally bred for hunting the red fox and for badger control. Although today’s dog will not be called upon much for this type of task.

There is a lot to consider before bringing this particular terrier into your home but it should not be one that you totally rule out.
