The Past Life of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Historically the life of the Stafford Bull Terrier was not a pleasant one. They were expected to complete many tasks that are now considered to be inhumane on many different levels. Some of the events that the Stafford Bull Terrier was expected to participate in was….

Blood Sports

A Stafford Bull Terrier that was used for this purpose was expected to fight till the death of either himself or his opponent. All of which took place in front of a bunch of blood thirsty spectators.

Bull Baiting

Here this breed of dog would be used for the purposes of baiting the bull at great risks to themselves with many times obtaining injuries from being gored or trampled.

Bear Baiting

Again the Staffordshire Terrier was matched up against an animal much bigger in size. The dogs would be expected to do battles with a bear that had been chained to a post. Often the dog would end up severely injured as the bear fought for its life.

With a history such as this and with the natural instincts and build of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier it is no wonder that they are sometimes classed as a dangerous animal to own. All through no fault of their own, and most often a fallacy.

Fortunately with more humane practices being put in place and the recognition that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a wonderful dog to own it has created a much better life for this breed of dog. They have many wonderful qualities and to bring the best of these traits out in this animal it means proper care and a loving home with firm control, just as it is with any dog breed.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is easily recognized according to its build and stature and comes in several different colors.
